What is Baptism? Who is Baptism For?
At Mercy Hill Church, we believe that every baptism tells a story of transformation—a visible sign of the invisible work God is doing in people’s lives. That’s why our vision is bold and rooted in faith: to see 5,000 people baptized and 500 sent out for church planting and missions by the year 2032. Every number represents a life changed, a soul awakened, and a step of obedience taken.
We know God is able to do exceedingly abundantly more than we could ask or imagine. As we pray and work toward this vision, it’s important to return to the basics: What is baptism? Who is it for? Whether you’re exploring faith, new to following Jesus, or considering your next step, this guide will walk you through the meaning and significance of baptism—and how it fits into God’s bigger story for your life.
What is Baptism?
Baptism is a physical act that represents a spiritual transformation. At its core, baptism is a public declaration of faith in Jesus Christ. It symbolizes the death of your old life and the beginning of your new life in Him.
We are saved by placing our faith in Jesus—believing in His perfect life, sacrificial death, and victorious resurrection. Baptism doesn’t save us, but it shows the world what Jesus has already done in our hearts. When someone is immersed in water, it pictures the burial of their old self; coming up from the water represents their resurrection into new life.
Baptism and the Gospel
The apostle Paul explains it this way in Romans 6:3–4:
“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”
Baptism is more than just a symbol—it’s a powerful demonstration of the Gospel message.
Who is Baptism For?
Baptism is for anyone who has trusted in Jesus for salvation. It is the first step of obedience for a new believer. One pastor I know said it like this, “Baptism is the declaration of faith.” It’s how someone tells the church and the world, “I’ve decided to follow Jesus.” At Mercy Hill, we take this seriously.
You see this pattern all over the New Testament. In Acts 16:13–15, we read about Lydia, a woman who believed the message of the Gospel and was baptized immediately:
“The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. And after she was baptized, and her household as well…”
In the early church, belief and baptism went hand in hand.
Why Should You Be Baptized?
If you’ve put your faith in Jesus, baptism is your next step. Here’s why:
- It’s commanded by Jesus. (Matthew 28:19–20)
- It follows the example of the early church.
- It declares your new identity in Christ.
- It strengthens your faith.
- It encourages others.
Think of it like wearing a wedding ring. You don’t need the ring to be married, but wearing it shows the world your commitment. In the same way, baptism is how we visibly identify with Christ and His people.
What If I Was Baptized as a Baby or Before I Truly Believe?
That’s a great and common question. If your baptism happened before your personal faith decision—whether as an infant or out of tradition—it may not reflect the biblical pattern of believer’s baptism. In that case, many choose to be baptized again as a true step of obedience and personal faith.
If God has been working in your life over the last few months and has saved you, don’t delay your baptism. Or if he saved you a long time ago, but you were never baptized, don’t wait any longer. Delayed obedience is still disobedience.
When Should I Be Baptized?
The time for obedience is always now. At Mercy Hill, we take this seriously. When we put the call out for people to get saved it is almost always coupled with an opportunity to be baptized. I am not saying we never raise hands or fill out cards, but baptism is really the way a new believer comes forward. Baptism should be the first step of obedience in the life of a new believer.
Baptism is the beginning of your journey with Jesus, not the finish line. If God has been working in your life and you’ve recently come to faith—or if you’ve been a believer for a while but have never taken this step—we invite you to be baptized.
