God First Gave to Us

September 24, 2020

Hey Church! We’re thankful that we have the opportunity to continue talking with you about giving. We know that this subject can be awkward and sometimes uncomfortable to hear, however, God’s Word wasn’t meant to shy away from the tough conversations. Here’s a little more about what the Bible says regarding giving…

We love because God first loved us. We give because God first gave to us. All of the Christian life is a joy-filled and loving response to God who loved us enough to go first. Giving is in every one of our hearts because we are all made in His image. That is why we see humans giving, even from the very beginning of time. Not because we are ordered by law, but because it is who we are as image-bearers.

God, in his grace, didn’t leave us without some help when it comes to understanding how to give. In Genesis, he puts tithing (giving the first 10% of your wealth) into the heart of Abraham and Jacob. He then gave his people the law, and tithing was established as a blueprint of how to give. For us today, tithing is still important because it helps us see God’s design for giving. Tithing can be your starting line for becoming a joy-filled, response inspired giver.

If you’ve never given, or you only give a little bit now and then, God is calling you to so much more. Billy Graham once said,

“We have found in our own home, as have thousands of others, that God’s blessing upon the nine-tenths, when we tithe, helps it to go farther than ten-tenths without His blessing.”
