Why Carter is Excited about "A Generous December"

A Generous December is going to set a precedent for Mercy Hill. Can we, as a church, start off our first year in Greensboro by giving generously to God’s mission? If not us, then who? And if not now, then when? These questions have been on my mind as my wife, Tamara, and I have been considering how we can give beyond what, for us, might be considered normal this month. The exciting thing about it is, we know exactly where the $10,000 will go—straight to the missionary family we support and straight to the Baltimore church plant we’re partnering with. God has given Mercy Hill these relationships to steward; how far are we willing to go to see these two specific parts of God’s mission succeed?

To be perfectly honest, because of the move to Greensboro, and because of our situation in life right now, Tamara and I aren’t what you might call “rollin’ in the dough.” I’m about to complete my education, and Tamara is our stable income. But, we can’t let that stop us. We might not be able to give much compared to some people, but we must figure out how we can give generously within our circumstances. God doesn’t need our money. But, he’s given us new hearts which desire to see new churches planted and people becoming Christians all over the world. Because of the grace he’s shown us, we want to give generously. It might take some further sacrifice for us to do that. Do we really need to buy each other Christmas presents when there are people who have little or no access to the Gospel in Southeast Asia? If we give just a little extra, the missionaries could effectively train up local Christians, teaching them what it means to be a disciple and what it means to make disciples. It’s a tough question, and might even seem a little extreme, but it’s one we have to consider.

In other words, what we give right now matters! For a number of reasons. It’s going to look different for each of us, but let’s set the right kind of precedent for Mercy Hill. Let’s make sure it is set in our DNA to give generously, and then watch and wonder and marvel at what God will do through his church.
