Week 1

People: Yanesha of Peru

The Yanesha are an indigenous people group in the central jungles of Peru. Common occupations for the Yanesha are subsistence farming, logging, or growing cash crops like coffee and papaya. As a minority, they have endured a history of oppression but remain a very warm and hospitable people. There are a growing number of believers among them but the health of the church is volatile with few having been taught proper doctrine and leadership. Many also find it hard to break from the superstitions and religious practices of their ancestors.

Passage: Psalm 96 (ESV)

1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth! 2 Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. 3 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! 4 For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods. 5 For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens. 6 Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. 7 Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength! 8 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts! 9 Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth! 10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns! Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.” 11 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; 12 let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy 13 before the Lord, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Week 3

People: Unreached of East Asia

East Asia has been closed to outside messengers of the gospel for decades, yet attempts to limit the gospel cannot contain the growth happening from inside the Asian church. The underground church has grown exponentially. Yet while the church grows among the majority populations, minorities remain unreached and without access to the gospel. Some groups still do not have Scripture in their own language.

Week 5

People: Displaced Peoples

The refugee crisis is transforming nations and neighborhoods alike. For many refugees, entering a new culture with nothing to claim as their own leaves them vulnerable and in need of receiving the biblical virtue of hospitality. Most refugees come from lands where they had no access to the gospel, and as a result of their oppression are questioning the faith practices that dominated their cultural heritage. In massive numbers, people are leaving places with no access to the gospel and coming to global cities where the church can share the good news of Jesus freely.

Passage: Matthew 24:3-14 (ESV)

3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” 4 And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are but the beginning of the birth pains. 9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. 10 And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
