Mighty God | Day 8
Imagine working at a place like Disney World where an extravagant fireworks show lights up the sky every single night. For the first week or two, you would feel lucky to witness something so spectacular. After a few months, though, you would barely look up. Familiarity would steal your sense of awe.
We are in danger of the same thing happening with the incredible words of Isaiah 9:6. These words are like fireworks declaring the glory of Jesus, yet we hear them so often during the Christmas season that they can start to feel ordinary and lose their impact.
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. ” – Isaiah 9:6
Isaiah 9:6 is anything but ordinary. Think about what it actually says. The child born in Bethlehem is the Mighty God. That title is a clear declaration that Jesus is truly and fully God.
Jesus is fully God and fully man. We may be familiar with that truth, but we need to fight to stay in awe of it. It is not just a theological idea. It is essential to our salvation. Jesus had to be fully man because the justice of God required that He be tempted as we are, yet without sin. And He had to be fully God because no mere human could bear the weight of God’s wrath and rise again in victory.
This advent, let’s fight to stay amazed. We will read familiar Scriptures, sing songs we have sung for years, and take part in the usual celebrations. In the middle of all of it, let’s pause and remember what everything is pointing to: our Mighty God, born as a child to save us.
Reflection Question
- What’s something about God that you used to find amazing but now take for granted?
- How can you fight for awe this season?
Prayer
Jesus, help us to stand in awe of You. Help us to see beauty in the things that have grown dull to us. Move our hearts to worship You, our Mighty God, in this season of advent.
Family Activity (Optional):
One-Minute Awe Hunt: Everyone spreads out (or stays in the same room) and looks for anything in the home that reminds them of God’s greatness — light, warmth, Christmas decorations, nature out the window, something beautifully made. When the timer ends, everyone shares one thing they noticed. Awe begins with paying attention. Just like the truth in Isaiah 9:6 can become familiar, so can the everyday gifts God gives us. Take just one minute to pause and notice wonder again.
