Ya’ll, the Christmas season does me in. Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas. I love purposefully remembering Jesus’ birth. I love the decorations and traditions and the nostalgia it all brings. But it seems like every year I find myself drained and dry when I turn the page onto the New Year.
So, this January I have been asking God to revive me (again). And though that’s a lovely prayer and sentiment, we humans don’t “coast” into a time of revival. We have to make some purposeful choices to press in and seek His face. Yes, God is sovereign. Yes, He does what He wants. Yes, He hears our prayers and graciously responds. But the pattern throughout Scripture of those who walk intimately with Him includes purposeful, vigilant choices made by humankind.
Acts 2:42 says that “they (believers) devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” The word for “devoted themselves” means “to persevere, be constantly diligent.” Constantly diligent. The pattern in scripture of those who saw the movement and experienced the active presence of God included diligence. It included purposeful choices.
In this Acts text we see that these early believers were purposeful in the apostles’ teachings-reading and studying, memorizing and meditating upon their words. They were purposeful to stay in fellowship with other Christ-followers-genuinely and sacrificially. They were vigilant in prayer. And they ate bread. How I love bread.
I get numb in this loud world at times. I get distracted with all the shiny things demanding my attention. Yet the call is clear. Press in. Choose to be in the Word. Choose to be in authentic fellowship. Choose to be vigilant in prayer. Then awe will come upon our souls because God really is that good and that glorious. (Acts 2:43)
One way that I am going to be purposeful in the next couple of weeks is to plan on attending the IF:Gathering at Mercy Hill, February 3rd and 4th. What’s the IF:Gathering? That’s a great question! Glad you asked. It’s a gathering of women from all over the world where we purposefully press into the Lord, seeking His face. (Sorry, my brothers in Jesus. Only sisters at this event.)
Women at Mercy Hill will host a simulcast of the event in which we’ll listen to speakers, study the Word, fellowship with friends, worship in music, laugh, cry, eat yummy food, and drink coffee. Lots of coffee. Amen. If you would like to learn more and/or sign up for IF:Mercy Hill, click here. But you may want to do it soon-ish. The deadline for registration is January 31st! I really hope to see you there!
