How to get involved in student ministry

At Mercy Hill we are committed to reaching middle and high school students.  Seth Titus provides three specific ways that you can get plugged in.

1. Young Life

What is it?

Young Life is an organization keenly dedicated to going to the student. Their primary aim is to reach students by building relationships through time, patience, trust, and consistency. Think back to when you were in middle/high school. Who was the most influential adult(outside of your family)? Certainly this was someone with whom you spent substantial and quality time. Discipleship requires presence. That’s the basic idea!

How can I get involved?

Young Life offers multiple areas of involvement that can be utilized by college students, young professionals, adults, and even alumni of YL. The outlets range from something as simple as prayer support to helping out administratively. YL is currently represented in the following local high schools: Greensboro Day, Grimsley, Northern, Northwest, Page, and Western. Clubs are held weekly at each school. If Young Life sounds like a good fit for you, below are some quick links to get you started!

2. FCA

What is it?

FCA stands for “Fellowship of Christian Athletes”. The focal point of this organization is sharing Christ through the impact of Christian coaches and athletes. FCA also works as a pipeline in uniting the local church with local athletes and athletic directors. For the sports minded and physically inclined individual, I could suggest no simpler or practical way to leverage your God given passions and abilities than to hook up with FCA!

How can I get involved?

FCA holds organized “huddles”, team Bible studies, coach Bible studies, and Chaplain programs for outreach as well as spiritual growth. Like Young Life, FCA presents service opportunities to college students, young professionals, and adults. Some Bible studies may be limited to members of a certain team, but “huddles” are open to anyone and everyone. If you have a desire to team up with FCA, below are some quick links to get you started!

3. Meet Them Where You Are

What it means?

Making a connection with students that will positively impact them is not strictly limited to pre-established organizations. I believe the most sincere form of involvement in a students life is one in which you unexpectedly go out of your routine to “meet” them. This isn’t meeting in the sense of “nice to meet you, my name is…”. I mean actually getting to know them: what they like, dislike, struggle against, dream about, and why they do what they do! We have a good amount of teachers and coaches at Mercy Hill that are in contact with students on a daily basis.

What do I do?

One of our members who coaches at Grimsley High School was able to host a team dinner in her home. Others have done something as simple as praying with the team before a sporting event or utilizing one on one classroom instruction time to be genuine and loving to their students. Another idea would be to find a club that meets in the high school near you where you could use your skills or even learn new skills. For example, if the school has a guitar, chess, drama, or math club, use your guitar, chess, drama, or math abilities to spend time with students and teach them what you know(or let them teach you)! The high school community needs people willing to give without asking in return. Be the giver, give what Christ has given you, and watch Him transform a young person’s life!
