Alpha and Omega | Day 31
Advent is a season of waiting, but it’s also a season of remembering who we’re waiting for. Jesus calls Himself the Alpha and Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. This name reminds us that He is the beginning and the end, the One who started the story and the One who will finish it.
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” – Revelation 22:13
From creation to new creation, Jesus is present. He was there when the world was spoken into existence (John 1:1–3), and He will be there when all things are made new (Revelation 21:6). Nothing in history, nothing in your life, falls outside His care. This season isn’t just about looking back to Bethlehem; it’s about looking forward to the day when Jesus returns to make everything right.
This name is a promise of stability in an unstable world. When life feels uncertain, when the future seems unclear, remember: the One who began the good work will bring it to completion (Philippians 1:6). He holds the first word and the last word. He holds your story, too. Every chapter of your life — joys, sorrows, victories, and struggles — is framed by His eternal presence. He is not only the Author but also the Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
Advent reminds us that history is not random or out of control. It has a beginning and an end, and both belong to Jesus. The manger was not the starting point of His existence, nor will the cross be the end of His reign. He is eternal, and His plan is perfect. The same God who spoke galaxies into motion entered our world as a baby in a barn, and the same God who conquered death will one day return to restore all things to himself.
So as you light the candles and sing the carols, let this name steady your heart: Alpha and Omega. The God who came is the God who is coming again. He is the start and the finish, and where we can put our hope.
Reflection Question
- What does it mean for you to trust Jesus as both the beginning and the end of your story?
- Where do you need to rest in His control today?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You hold the first word and the last word over all of history and over our lives. When life feels uncertain, remind us that You are the Alpha and Omega, the God who came and the God who is coming again. We place our hope in You alone. Amen.
