Mercy Hill Church - Starter Groups - March 2017

A Step that will Change Your Life

There is a famous Chinese proverb attributed to philosopher Lao Tzu that says, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Although I had heard this many times before, the meaning of this saying has become more real to me in the past two months. At Christmas I received a gift that I had been wanting for some time: a Fitbit. Ever since beginning to wear this nifty device, I’ve been counting my steps, setting goals to increase the number of steps I take each day, and even walking around my house for no reason at the end of each day just to increase my step count (come on fellow Fitbit wearers, you know you do it too). There are some days that my step count is off the charts, like the day we hosted my seven-year-old son’s birthday party, and there are some days that it is easy to tell that I have been in way too many meetings.

Even though we are all taking thousands of steps every day, there is no denying the fact that all steps are NOT created equal. Many recognize that the first steps in a new direction, such as a career change, a different exercise routine, or the implementation of a new discipline is often the hardest to take. Some steps are painful, like the barefoot one right onto the Lego block left in the carpet. Some are joyous, like the twenty or so steps that took you across the stage at graduation. Some are filled with uncertainty, some are wrapped in excitement, and some are shrouded in fear. Proverbs 16:9 tells us that the Lord is involved in every step we take, and Galatians 5:25 exhorts believers to walk “in step with the Spirit” so that our journey is filled with the fruit of the Spirit and not the desires of the flesh. No matter what each step holds, good or bad, there is value in every step as they take us along the journey of life.

Step into a Community Group

At Mercy Hill, we believe that Christians are not meant to walk these steps alone and that discipleship happens best in community. You will often hear us say that the steps you take throughout the week are more important than the ones you take on the weekend. It is because of this belief that we do everything possible to provide avenues for everyone to get connected to a life-giving Community Group. This is done through an event called Grouplink which happens 3 times a year; however, sometimes people are not able to make it to Grouplink due to a scheduling conflict, and others come into the church in-between Grouplink events. If this is true for you, then Starter Groups are your next step into community!

Our next round of Starter Groups will begin this coming Wednesday night March 1st from 6:30pm – 8:00pm and continue to meet every Wednesday through March 22nd at our Regional Campus Kids Space (7616 Business Park Drive). Come enjoy a free dinner while getting to know our leadership and others in the church who are connecting into Christ-centered community. We will study the word of God together, discuss how the text applies to our lives, and pray for each other and the mission of God. If needed, the cost of child care is reimbursed during your time at Starter Groups.

Starter Groups are a great way to transition into a regular Community Group. With that in mind, participants in Starter Groups will be able to pre-register for the new Community Groups that will be launching at the next Grouplink (Friday, May 5th) before those groups are open to the general public. You can sign up for Starter Groups today by clicking the link below, and I can’t wait to be there to greet you when you STEP through the door!
