A Better Boast | Day 5
“So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.” – 1 Corinthians 3:21-23
The believers in Corinth were trying to boost their significance by asserting their association with significant people (Paul, Apollos, Cephas). We also have a natural impulse to connect ourselves with significant people and events. Like when an athlete wins a gold medal someone might say, “I went to the same high school as her” (but fail to mention that their respective classes were 11 years apart). Or if a place becomes a national headline someone may say, “I used to live there” (Well actually it was 30 miles away during an internship one summer).
We want to feel like we are part of the significance. The reason we boast – whether in ourselves or in others – is because we want to matter.
Wanting to feel significant is not wrong. And because of the gospel we don’t have to clamor for significance. The Corinthians thought they mattered more if they lined up with a popular leader. But Paul says these leaders were all for the benefit of the Corinthians. Even death will benefit those who are in Christ as it ushers us into eternal life with our Savior!
